Laminated Traveler’s Notebook
Traveler’s notebook is a cover that holds multiple notebooks inserted through an elastic band. Usually, traveler’s notebooks are made of leather but you can find some that are made of different materials such as fabric, faux leather, or even laminated cardstock patterned paper. Before you buy one, try making your own.

Items can be found at Michaels Arts and Crafts store.
2mm elastic band (can be found in the jewelry section)
Medium eyelets by Recolleciton (optional but I use medium pewter eyelets to punch middle hole)
Patterned papers (since it is not double sided, I used two)
5 mil laminating paper
Corner rounded punch (Fiskars the small side)
Tombow permanent adhesive.
Hole puncher (about the size of the medium pewter eyelets, you should be able to insert an eyelet without it going all the way through the hole)
Paper cutter and a score board (or a ruler)
This traveler’s notebook cover is made for the $2 stitched notebooks from Michaels.
Cut patter paper to size 11″ width x 7 1/2 ” height. Score at 5″ and 6″. Do not fold yet.
I fold the opposite of the score. For the front paper, score with the pattern facing up and for the inside paper, score with the pattern side facing down. For this, the carrousel will be the cover side of my notebook.
Paste the paper together with the pattern side facing out. After securing the sides, you can fold the paper to it’s form using a bone folder. Don’t forget to round the corners. Rounding the corners protects your notebook and it looks better.
Place the paper towards the close end of the laminating sheet. This will save you from cutting all four sides.
Insert the closed end into the laminator first. You can rerun the sheet a few times to get rid as much air bubble as you can. It won’t be perfect but you can try to push press the sheets with the bone folder and run it through the machine again.
You are working with heat so you need to be careful. It is easier to work with the laminated sheet while it is warm.
Cut the excess laminating sheet as close as you can but not too close to the paper that it can open the laminated sheet. I use the edge of the scissor as a guide. If you have a cutter that an cut laminated sheets, then go ahead and use the cutter.
After cutting out the excess, run the sheet through the machine. It will be easier to fold the laminated sheet while it is warm. As soon as it comes out, fold one side on the score then run it again to fold the other side.
Use a dry erase marker to mark the hole to where you want to punch for the elastic. Measure 1/4″ away from the edge top and bottom. That is where you will be punching three holes which will be 1/4″ apart. The middle hole will be at 3 3/4″ away top and at 1/2″ from side since the spine measures an inch.
I used the pewter eyelet and placed it in the middle of the spine. Use a hammer to gently but with a little force to tap the pewter eyelet through. Here I am only using the eyelet to punch the hole in the middle, however you can put eyelets on the holes to protect your book from the elastic band.
Remove the eyelet and run the the book through the laminator.
To measure the elastic band, close the notebook and wrap the band around once widthwise so just a little over 11 inches and for the insert about four times lengthwise so about 30 inches.
Wave the band around the flames just enough heat to secure the thread so it will be easier to insert through the holes.
Insert both ends of the shorter elastic into the middle hole from the outside of the book. Take both ends and make an overhand knot which should be inside of the book.
Now for the band for the elastic. From the outside of the book, insert in the middle hole with the shorter end and a longer end on the side hole. Take the longer end and insert to the side hole of the bottom of the book from the inside of the book. The longer end should be outside of the book which you will insert in the middle hole.
Now take the longer side, which is coming out of the middle hole, and thread through the top middle hole where the shorter end is. The longer side should be outside of the notebook. Thread through the last hole.
Then thread through the last hole in the bottom and when the thread is outside again, thread from the outside to the inside in the middle bottom hole.
That might was difficult to explain, I hope you guys get it.
I enjoyed making these.
